Since the beginning of recorded history the plant kingdom has been a source of powerful extracts and essences that have been cherished for both beauty and wellbeing, with essential oils dating back to ancient Egypt in 3000 to 2500 B.C. In fact, Cleopatra’s legendary beauty wasn’t simply attributed to her good genes, but instead the extensive use of essential oils, fatty oils, clays and salts from the Dead Sea.

Fast forward to 1910, when a French cosmetic chemist suffered severe burns and submerged his injuries in a large container of lavender oil. He later coined the term “aromatherapie” based on his experience and further studied the benefits on injured soldiers during World War I. Science continues to study the benefits of essential oils, including a plastic surgeon at Duke University who is exploring the use of essential oils in the recovery from surgery.

Technically, essential oils are the aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. For the plants, the oils provide protection against predators and disease, fight infection, and initiate cell regeneration. For us, the molecules of essential oils are incredibly minute – much smaller than the cells in our bodies – so they are able to enter our skin and support every cell quickly. For the best and safest use, experts recommend diffusing essential oils or applying them with a carrier oil. It’s simple enough to do at home, but what about at the office or on-the-go?

Easily Applied Cream-To-Oil Skin Treatments

Nourish Organic™ has you covered, literally, and their new line of aromatherapy skincare is hitting Earth Fare stores this month. These unique cream-to-oil treatments contain exclusive blends of certified organic essential oils to enhance your skin and revitalize your senses.

Skin Boost features lemon oil, cassia oil, and cinnamon bark oil to induce positive feelings and emotions, and strengthen the body’s defenses. Perfect for when you are feeling stressed and need to refocus your energy.

Skin Calm contains chamomile oil, ylang ylang oil, and patchouli oil to relieve stress and tension and reduce inflammation. This is the ultimate nighttime formula, perfect for relaxing your mind and body.

Skin Cool is formulated with peppermint oil and wintergreen oil to promote relaxation and soothe the skin. With the refreshing qualities of both oils, this is an ideal application to kickstart your morning before you start the day.

Given the efficacy of essential oils it should come as no surprise that Nourish Organic’s new line does much more than invigorate the senses. All three formulas also nourish your skin with Fair Trade Shea Butter and Vitamin E. And if you’re wondering what exactly all of the essential oils do for your skin and senses, here’s a cheat sheet:

  • Lemon Oil – contains a high vitamin content that detoxifies and brightens skin, with an uplifting scent that can help boost concentration and immunity.
  • Cassia Oil – helps to tighten and lift the skin, with a warm and uplifting aroma that stimulates the central nervous system and improves circulation.
  • Cinnamon Bark and Leaf Oil – acts as a general stimulant and improves circulation both internally and when applied to the skin, helping to smooth and plump the skin for a more youthful look.
  • Chamomile Oil – provides anti-inflammatory benefits that help to alleviate muscle and joint pain while soothing skin and calming irritation.
  • Ylang Ylang Oil – helps skin retain its natural moisture, with a delicate and calming scent that provides relief from stress.
  • Patchouli Oil – features a sweet, spicy and musky aroma to balance emotions and enhance complexion.
  • Peppermint Oil – has a refreshing, revitalizing fragrance that helps stimulate circulation, while brightening and toning the skin with its cooling effect.
  • Wintergreen Oil – helps to promote circulation, ease pain and soothe discomfort, while toning the skin and helping to cool and calm circulation.

Our Verdict: Let’s face it, who doesn’t need a little escape at work during meetings and tight deadlines? So, we were anxious to put these little tubes of goodness to the test. We were pleasantly delighted by the gentle scent – it was strong enough to feel the effects of aromatherapy but delicate enough that it didn’t offend everyone around you. But the real game-changer was the result of the cream-to-oil application. With most moisturizers (even the best), you find yourself reapplying all day. Not with this. We put it on in the morning and it lasted all day, despite lots of hand-washing and even more typing. The oil soaked right in and stayed put, leaving hands soft and soothed despite everyday abuse.

Treat Your Entire Body to Rose Hip Oil

Because we were so sold on Nourish Organic’s cream-to-oil skin treatments, we couldn’t wait to try their new Rejuvenating Rose Butter. In case you’ve been living in a bubble, Rose Hip Oil has been one of the top skincare trends over the last three to four years.

Rose Hip Oil literally comes from the “hips” of the wild rose, which are the small fruits that grow behind the flowers and appear after the rose has bloomed and lost its petals. The hips are slightly bitter and have a woodsy smell and they are often used in medicinal teas due to their Vitamin C and antioxidant properties.

The recent rise of Rose Hip Oil on the beauty scene is due to its rejuvenating and clarifying effects. It contains a bounty of nutrients, like vitamins A, C, and E, essential fatty acids, and retinoic acid. These nutrients combine to balance skin and improve elasticity, texture, and tone. Unfortunately, the application and availability of Rose Hip Oil is most often limited to a tiny bottle of pure oil – great for your face but not really practical for all-over application.

Enter Nourish Organic’s Rejuvenating Rose Butter, which combines Rose Hip Seed Oil with Fair Trade Shea Butter for added moisture and Rose Clay for detoxification. It’s an extremely decadent formula that provides intense hydration for your skin. And just for fun, their Fair Trade Shea butter is sourced from a Women’s Cooperative that doubles as a hippopotamus sanctuary in Ghana (true story).

Our Verdict: We’ve often been tempted to slather our skin with Rose Hip Oil, but that was never quite practical with a tiny bottle of oil. So we had no hesitations in trying out this formula. Our ultimate test was applying this thick formula all over first thing in the morning before barre class – a sweaty endurance test that coconut oil has never been able to pass. This fast-absorbing formula passed with flying colors, leaving our skin luxuriously hydrated but never greasy and our skin stayed soft and soothed all day long.
