BST, also known as bovine growth hormone is A FDA approved drug used to increase milk production in dairy cows. The dairy cows are injected with BST, which then alters the hormones and causes more milk production. High doses of this hormone can results if calf embryo mortality, and udder infections (mastitis) which in turn, results in more antibiotic use. There are medical concerns around elevated levels of IGF-1 in humans who consume milk produced by BST cows. IGF-1 levels could influence the breast, colon, and prostate health.
