Yellow Dye 5 (Tartrazine) is a synthetic azo dye made from petroleum chemicals. An azo dye is a subcategory of artificial dyes, described by its chemical composition of the azo group. It is used to color processed foods, cosmetics, and medicine a yellow-orange color. It can also be used to color paint, mouthwash, and detergents. Despite being FDA-approved, many European countries have since banned the inclusion of Yellow Dye 5 due to the health risks, such as ADHD and allergic reactions.
