THE BOOT LIST ITEM #102

Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH) is a lab-made growth hormone used by some dairy farmers to increase milk production in cows. It is also called bovine somatotropin (BST) which is the natural form of this hormone in cattle, while rBGH is the synthetic version. Each version of this hormone stimulate milk production by increasing levels of insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) in cows. Some studies suggest that milk and meat from rBGH-treated cows have higher levels of IGF-1. High IGF-1 levels may influence tumor development, but the link between IGF-1 and cancer remains unclear. Choosing meats and dairy products labeled organic and specify rBGH free are better options.
