Propylparaben, also known as propyl paraben naturally occurs in certain plants and insects, but is also manufactured for use in cosmetics. It is commonly used as a preservative to prevent microbial contamination, or spoilage, and extend shelf life. Propylparaben is often found in shampoos and conditioners. There are allergic reactions associated with parabens in contact with skin. Ongoing studies show a potential for parabens to interfere with hormone function.
