Gold Leaf is a type of gold that has been hammered into thin sheets around 0.1 micrometers thick. It’s application purposes range from surface decoration, paper edges, ceramics and you guessed it, food! Gold leaf is often used to decorate desserts like cakes and chocolates, or used as a garnish. While it has visual appeal and is typically 22-karat or 91.7% pure gold when eaten in this form. There are other metals used to create this “food-grade gold”, which are often unknown. Not only does this ingredient pose an environmental and economic impact, gold has no nutritional value.
